Dmitry Korchak’s conducting debut with “Aida” opera

March 15, 2018

29th March NOVAT presents Verdi’s opera “Aida”, which will be conducted by the Principal Guest Conductor of NOVAT Dmitry Korchak. Recognized in the world as an outstanding lyric tenor, Dmitry Korchak has recently begun performing as a symphonic and operatic conductor at European and Russian venues. This will be the first time maestro steps into the conductor’s desk at the Novosibirsk opera and ballet theatre for Verdi’s ageless masterpiece.

Dmitry Korchak: “On the eve of my conducting debut with “Aida” I feel happy, since my lifelong dream is about to come true – this great music won’t pass by me, and I will have a chance to become a part of it. Due to my specialty I will never be able to sing Radamès and enjoy the magic aura of this opera on the stage during the performance. I am incredibly happy to have an opportunity to take my friends - musicians and singers of NOVAT into musical splendor of Vyacheslav Starodubtsev’s amazing “Aida” production”.

Dmitry Korchak successfully combining his singing career with conducting, believes his outstanding achievements have to do a lot with his tutor, Viktor Sergeevich Popov. Thanks to exactly his influence Dmitry graduated in both singing and conducting at the Academy of Choral Art, nowadays named after this eminent musician and tutor. Dmitry Korchak is currently following the path of famous singers-conductors like Plácido Domingo, José Cura, Peter Schreier using his vocal wealth and a priceless experience of cooperation with leading conductors on best venues of the world for his conducting career.

Dmitry Korchak considers his upcoming debut with “Aida” a milestone of his conducting career: “The scope of the intention and it’s expression in “Aida” enthralls imagination since the first look at the score, at the cast. Here one can notice the strongly pronounced stylization with lots of folk tunes mixed with a sublime Italian style. Various layers of choral sound, multilevel lines spoken simultaneously from different sides, with different tempos and different dramatic background – all these things remind of artistic devices in contemporary filmmaking. This opera overwhelms with beauty and sensuality of vocal patterns, with phenomenal musical tension. Orchestra plays its righteous role within the captivating action, its palette is complex, full of small features, and each time you open the score you find new tinctures”.

Dmitry’s first try at the conductor’s desk of the Novosibirsk opera and ballet theatre happened in summer 2017 during the gala-concert of opera stars, which closed Veronika Dzhioeva opera festival. Later on, in November maestro conducted “L’elisir d’amore” opera for the first time at NOVAT, then on 2nd and 3rd December Gioachino Rossini’s church cantata Stabat Mater was performed under his baton in Isidor Zak concert hall. Ekaterina Kretova, reporter with the newspaper “Moskovskij Komsomolets” commented on this event: “Performance of Rossini’s sacred work was brilliant. While following his successful career of an opera soloist maestro Dmitry Korchak shows complete command of conductor’s art and deep understanding of meanings and intentions of this music – just as wise as beautiful it is”. Music critic Alexander Matusevich, mentioned that maestro has “a distinct touch and solid line-up of architectonics of the unity”.

Principal Guest Conductor of NOVAT Dmitry Korchak stated the following: “I am proud that our theatre is capable of staging the most massive and ambitious project. I am looking forward to meet all admirers of the Novosibirsk opera at a festival, which will take place at NOVAT this summer. During the festival we will meet again “Aida” and other opera masterpieces as well as hear the best opera singers of the contemporary”.
